The power of inclusivity in fashion

How gender equality can promote sustainability.

March was international women’s month and when it comes to women’s rights, the fashion industry has a lot to answer for. From boardrooms to garment manufacturing, in the fashion industry inclusivity and gender equality are still to be achieved.

Fashion is mainly aimed at women, yet largely run by men. Design schools are mostly attended by women, yet the top designers are still mostly men. Only 14% of major fashion brands are run by a female executive, according to a 2015 Business of Fashion survey of 50 global brands. This is even more prominent in the top fashion houses with just 4 female designers heading luxury brands out of the 15 at LVMH.

When looking at supply chains, the situation is reversed with most garment workers being women, approximately 80% of them. They often work in unsafe conditions, earning very low wages. This is made worse by the lack of transparency in the industry which hinders progress as brands often don’t know who made their clothes.

At Sustainable Brand Platform we believe that inclusivity is key to achieving sustainability, and we take the issue of gender equality very seriously. More than half of SBP’s team is composed of women and many of the brands on our platform are either funded or owned by women. To get a better understanding of the issue of gender equality in fashion, we asked a few of them to share their experiences navigating this industry as women and how they think this industry could benefit from a more inclusive leadership.

Marina, the founder of MÁGATA, a slow fashion brand from Germany that creates timeless pieces made of natural materials, admitted that without her existing connections within the fashion industry it would have been hard to establish her brand.
