Sicels is a slow fashion studio based in Copenhagen, established late 2019 by Mariapia Mineo.
The brand is focusing on seasonless, timeless scarves designed in Copenhagen and ethically hand crafted in England. All scarves are designed in Copenhagen and printed in premium family run studios in Italy and England that, alongside sourcing only natural & sustainable textiles, is strongly committed to use innovative technology to reduce water usage and recycle excess dyes in the process.
Sicels is very focused on raw materials sourcing: fabrics used on Sicels scarves range from the classic Silk twill and Crepe de Chine to Organic Peace silk, Merino virgin wool, Cotton voile and Ecovero Viscose.
All dyes used are water soluble and the fabrics are coated and prepared for printing using a mixture of natural products only. Branded viscose fibers are certified with the internationally recognized EU Ecolabel Lenzin and Ecovero. The wood pulp comes from forests that are located in Austria and Bavaria which are either certified with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC). The silk is sourced from India from certified Peace Silk supplier.
The brand as well as the Indian supplier are opposed to “regular” silk where the silk worm is boiled alive and toxic chemicals are used to degum the cocoon. The Indian suppliers have created a modern form of rural cooperation where it’s important to them that they treat the silk worms, themselves, their community and their environment with utmost care. By working as a co-op, the production is cleverly decentralized to allow the silk farmers, spinners, weavers etc. to work directly from their own areas.
The production has been splitting between Italy and England. English suppliers are strongly committed to use innovative technology to reduce water usage and recycle excess dyes in the process.
Packaging is made by 90% recycled cardboard and it is printed with water-based ink and ready to be used again.

What does sustainable fashion mean to you? - Durability - Adopting fair work practices - Minimal use of chemical elements |

What would you like the priorities of your target customer to be? - Quality/Design - Sustainability |

Is your communication correctly inspired by your degree of sustainability or do you think you could improve that? I will focus on communicating how every step of the process is executed with focus on the highest quality and durability while reducing the impact on the environment . I would also like to communicate how producing very small quantities with European suppliers who are involved in keeping the process as sustainable as possible impacts on the price of the products but also "testifies" that everyone involved in the supply chain has been treated with fairness. |
